Hong Kong is currently experiencing a significant resurgence in COVID-19 cases, with the number of positive tests reaching a six-month high. Recent data from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) shows that over 10% of nearly 8,900 respiratory samples collected in late April tested positive for Covid-19, marking the highest positivity rate in half a year. The XDV variant, a sub-lineage of the previously dominant JN.1 strain, is now prevalent in the community. While the severity of illness has not increased, the high transmissibility of the current variants means even vaccinated individuals may become susceptible to infection after a few months, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
Outbreaks have been reported in schools and care facilities, and healthcare professionals continue to stress the importance of basic preventive measures such as mask-wearing, especially for those at higher risk.
